New PSNI chief constable George Hamilton 'greatly admired'

He is currently head of rural policing in Northern Ireland.

THE PSNI HAS named its new Chief Constable. George Hamilton (no, not that one) is the current PSNI Assistant Chief Constable.

He takes over from Matt Baggott who is retiring at the end of the summer after five years in the job.

Hamilton beat Garda Assistant Commissioner Derek Byrne and Metropolitan Police Assistance Commissioner Cressida Dick for the post.

Outgoing Chief Constable Baggott said Hamilton is “an outstanding police leader with significant skills and experience”.

Hamilton has been a police officer since 1985, when he joined the RUC and has experience across a number of areas and disciplines including leading investigations and, most recently, directing rural policing in Northern Ireland.

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore, still Minister for Foreign Affairs, said that Hamilton brings “experience, expertise and dedication to the role”.

He said: ”I know from my many friends in Northern Ireland that he is greatly admired by his colleagues in the PSNI and across the whole community.”
