GERRY ADAMS HAS said it is “unacceptable” that he was unable to attend a St Patrick’s Day event at the White House last night after he was delayed by security personnel checking his documents.
The Sinn Féin president was due to attend the annual event hosted by President Barack Obama, along with deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald and the North’s deputy first minister Martin McGuinness.
However he was prevented from entering the White House by security personnel who delayed him for 90 minutes before he decided to leave.
A Sinn Féin spokesperson initially described it as an “administrative problem” but Adams said in a later statement that he was informed by White House staff of “an issue with security” when he arrived last night.
After two decades of travelling back and forth to the USA and countless meetings in the White House with successive US Presidents, this is an unacceptable development. It is obvious that there remain some within the US administration who seek to treat Sinn Fein differently.
“Some of our political representatives have been denied access to the USA while others, including myself, have to regularly go through additional searches and scrutiny when we travel to and from the USA.”
Gerry Adams says it is unacceptable that he wasn’t allowed into the White House last night pic.twitter.com/fky1lycMIp
Adams also claimed that last year the US State Department initially refused to meet him as part of a “transparent effort to pressurise Sinn Féin during negotiations at Stormont”.
“That meeting did take place after protests from US political leaders. Efforts to pressurise us in the negotiations failed,” he said.
The US Secret Service, which has responsibility for security at the White House, tonight said it regrets the incident, which it put down to an “administrative input error”, in a statement sent to TheJournal.ie.
The Secret Service would like to express our regret that the issue involving Mr. Gerry Adams’ entry into the St. Patrick’s Day reception could not be resolved in a more timely manner.
Unfortunately, an administrative input error received by the Secret Service was not able to be rectified promptly.
A spokesperson for Adams tonight told TheJournal.ie that nobody from the US Secret Service or the White House had contacted the Sinn Féin leader to apologise or discuss last night’s incident.
However, the spokesperson noted that representatives from the US State Department (the equivalent of our Department of Foreign Affairs) were “very apologetic” during a meeting with Adams this afternoon.

Neither the Secret Service nor a White House spokesperson addressed questions regarding Adams’ claim that Sinn Féin was “treated differently” at the event or that staff cited “security” in preventing him from entering.
‘Clerical error’
Earlier, a Sinn Féin spokesperson told TheJournal.ie: “He [Adams] was invited to the event by Obama, but there was a hold up and he just went on. It was an administrative and clerical error rather than anything else.”
The spokesperson was at that stage unable to provide more detail, saying that Adams was in meetings with US congressmen and senators on Capitol Hill and could not be reached.
Adams said that at those meetings with the Congressional Friends of Ireland, the US politicians shared his “grave disappointment at the White House situation and expressed their determination to have this issue resolved”.
Sinn Féin will not sit at the back of the bus for anyone. We are elected to represent citizens and we will do this. I am hopeful that the controversy around my White House invitation will help lead to a resolution of all these matters.
According to IrishCentral.com, Adams was pulled aside from the Sinn Féin visiting party by security personnel who examined his documents.
After he was left waiting for 90 minutes while his passport was checked, Adams decided to leave the event when it appeared there was no resolution.
McDonald and McGuinness attended the event where Taoiseach Enda Kenny presented Obama with the traditional bowl of shamrock.
Speaking at Leinster House today, Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh said he wasn’t aware of the incident but said it should not have happened.
“No political representative should be left out but we’ll see what exactly is involved,” he said.
As far as I know he [Adams] is meeting senators and congressman at the moment in the United States but I’m not across the detail of what’s happening in the States.
The Dublin South-Central TD said it is a matter for the US authorities.
The Sinn Féin spokesperson earlier noted that Adams has been to the White House on numerous occasions in the past and had attended the annual Speaker’s Lunch on Capitol Hill earlier in the day, where Obama was also in attendance.

I’ve news for you Bobby, he’s not most peoples cup of tae either.
A good supporter like yourself probably loves him but the majority of the country loathe him.
The downfall of the labour vote, the big rise in the FF vote and the increase in the independents show that your beloved party did not pick up what they expected.
The voters don’t like Gerry.
It’s almost as if the secret service don’t believe he was never a member of a terrorist organisation. Does that mean the US thinks someone with aspirations to be Taoiseach might have told a lie.
True Louth was a refuge for catholic families being shot and burned out of their homes by the British, those who armed themselves to protect their families and communities were branded terrorists a label which the Irish government carried on because they were afraid of the Brits and also wanted to maintain the status quo of two parties ( whose policies and motives were the same) to alternate power to theirs and their friends mutual benefit.
@ Alan Kennedy,
Stay classy in Straffan while living in Edinburgh, your input into the comments has about the same decible strength as a Lambeg Drum has on the 12th of July, to those that actually live here where it matters on the island of Ireland, But thanks anyway.
Gerry Adams the man that brought peace to Ireland.Ff fg the partys that abandoned their people in the north of Ireland to be treated as second class citizens.
What did he do besides get a rigged Nobel Peace prize?
Bomb hospitals and civilians with Drones? Ya he was a great president alright, pity there wasn’t more like him!!
Ger Buckley
My thoughts exactly, – I wouldn’t put it past a sneak like Edna to use his little bit of influence with Barry to try to demean Gerry Adams by making him endure a prolonged ‘security check’ – in an effort to thwart his suitability for a senior government position, by magnifying his association with a ‘terrorist’ organisation.
Edna is not fit to tie Gerry Adam’s shoelaces…
Edna is a POS.
Cuzzy Rah, ” Freedom fighting brothers “, you are some imbecile, lay claim to that filth if you want you clown, Freedom fighters, LOL, thugs more like it and it doesn’t make us any less Irishmen than you. If you are the epitome of a true Irishman god help us.
Seeing eye, I don’t know about some of the politicians but I want our Government Ministers to be there. What other country in the world has a festival like St Patrick’s Day that is celebrated world wide. On a purely mercenary level you could not buy the publicity or access to power that this one day delivers. On another level it is a chance for ireland to reconnect with its broad and varied diaspora. Th cost of attending is really small beer in the overall context.
Dave,
Enda is the acting Taoiseach.
Gerry isn’t, would love to be, but never will be.
Gerry probably swanned in acting like a very important “Taoiseach” and they tossed him out.
The president of our country should be the one to attend these events .Not political hacks a President addressing a president not the caretaker of a non government department
@seeingeye they don’t – it’s standard international practice that the host nation pays the expenses of their guests in these situations. Did you know that we are the only country in the world that has has guaranteed annual access to POTUS since WT Cosgrave’s first visit in 1928? Other nations would kill for this!
Alan Cooke I take it you are not as stupid as you pretend to be with your silly comments. Adams HAD an invitation, on it was a request for personal details which he presumably filled in like he did on the other occasions he attended the White House. The egg is on the Yanks face not Adams. Before you say it, no I am certainly not a Shinner and actually think Adams has to stand down before his party will be attractive to the general public , nevertheless to show such disrepect to an elected representative of the Irish people is unforgivable whoever they may be.
Probably because our economy is almost wholly dependent on exports and maintaining relationships with our biggest trading partners is crucial to us not having to live exclusive on staple foods
I agree with you Gus I’m certainly no fan of Mr Adams or his party and he should stand down, however, the American security forces in this case were being a tad overcautious, understandable considering their heightened security.
Probably asked him if he was ever in the IRA or a similar terrorist organisations and he gave the usual answer! McGuinness probably answered truthfully and was let in. Mary Loo just looked at them and they were afraid to refuse her.
lets just hope Hillary Clinton does not “need” the “irish” vote next election,
it was a deliberate snub which is worrying as they won’t even admit it, whatever their reason
can’t see adams bothering with it next year nor enda being invited again for that matter
That comment is sexist and in damn poor taste would you make that comment about Noonan or Riley when he was minister of health or any other fat male..Before red thumpers start I am not a Shinner only someone who was brought up to respect others even if I disagree with them.
Marc – traitors? Calm down. We certainly had a crisis, still have, but like it or not it’s bankers and FF who are culpable. FG/Labour did a good job in the circumstances. Again – not good enough, but we were in financial ruin.
He is without support from the Republican Party & a poll last night revealed that 40% of Republican voters would back a third candidate in the event of a Trump/Clinton run off
Trump has an excellent chance. It’s pretty much down to him and Clinton now. The republicans won’t allow a third candidate cause they know that hands it to Clinton. My money’s on Trump.
Wow the hatred here against gerry is pure poision.ff fg must be after joining up I can smell the tripe and it ain’t good…..sf must have ye neo libs scared..
Gerry definitely is reading too much into it. Leader of fourth largest party in Irish Parliament denied a meeting above desk officer level in State Department last year (oh but I’m an important Gerry not an ordinary Gerry so youse must see me at an important level even though we are now practicing ordinary politics) and this year the leader of the third largest party who holds no public office (conditionally he is just a TD) expects extra special treatment. Did his name raise a red flag for the gun running, politically motivated murder, ordinary murder, murder of a fellow terrorist through neglect to further personal aims, pederasty protection or just ordinary decent “republicanism”. Who knows. But paranoia and conspiracy theory are the hall marks of megalomania.
He’s the leader of largest political party after the government super coalition elect which in a Westminster parliamentary system, which is what we have, makes him the leader of the opposition which in turn entitles him to the same access as the government. He’ll get a private audience with Obama tomorrow now that the Secret Service gave apologized for their stuff up
It’s a great opportunity for our government to meet with US politicians, build relationships and speak about our small country. No other nation has an annual invite to the white house, not to mention the lunches & dinners on Capitol hill. Whatever your politics, there is no denying the strong links we have with the US.
I am not a Sinn Féin supporter but this is an insult. We would have no Peace Process without the bravery and commitment of Gerry Adams. To me this indicates a lack of understanding and commitment by the the present US administration. The Enda Kenny Irish government have also been found wanting in their commitment.
John. Its an insult to the people of Ireland, and no one can see it. How dare the American President invite someone then decide or maybe it was someone in Government who asked for h not to be there. Its still an insult to the Irish people. When Kenny can give a speech and put jaysus and i
@james by terrorists presumably you refer to the loyalist who tried to shoot and burn Irish catholics out of the north of Ireland or the British army who came to help them by killing innocent men women and children. No now I know who you mean by terrorist the Irish government who cowardly stood by and let it happen and who responded by trying to silence and criminalise those who fought back.
No Joe if you read the comment I took issue with crediting a movement for a peace process when they were an integral reason for the need for the same peace process. The’re were of course terrorists on both sides even if you can only see them on one side. The same gene pool was responsible for that poor prison officers murder yesterday.
What an idiotic and downright stupid thing to say James. Ethnic cleansing was taking place 100 miles from Dublin. Loyalists burning Catholics from their homes, civil rights marchers being attacked by RUC and B specials. Irish government of the day doing nothing to help. Stickies awol. That’s how the provos came into being. They reacted to the terrorism being perpetrated on their community. But that’s an uncomfortable truth for the apologists like yourself who inhabit these pages.
Andrew they finished up using terror for political purposes not to defend terror inflicted on their community. If you count up the casualties they killed more of their own volunteers and community than the terrorists on the other side. As for the peace process they didn’t stop killing after that either or the Shinners advocating for their release or collecting them from prison
Andrew I wouldn’t bother a finegael TD said before the election that all the Irish people killed by the loyalists and the Brits got what they deserved (including women and children). This is standard finegael policy.
@ EmmaLoodle: Just shows what an ill-informed airhead you are. Anyone who knows anything about the peace process knows that he did show bravery and commitment at considerable danger to himself. I doubt anyone else could have brought the die-hard Republicans with him. This is recognised by everyone involved in the process, including those in the three Governments involved.
I am no supporter but that should not have happened. He is a TD! To have him waiting like that , an obviously false ‘security issue’ is an insult not just to him but to our country, our people’s right to vote and our democracy!
Absolutely, irrespective of who the person is, if you are personally invited to an event at someones residence and then refused entry it is nothing short of disrespectful.
Very poor behaviour by the Americans, it makes them look extremely unprofessional, it doesn’t make Jarry look bad – he was invited. Quite simply, if you don’t want him there then don’t ask him.
Ger Buckley’s comment & mine were removed because they hinted that Hugh’s man-crush Kenny was behind this sneaky move. From what I’ve seen, I wouldn’t put anything past Edna…
Very wrong insulting an elected member of our government regardless of how you feel about him. Don’t remember orange people being excluded from such activities .
He isn’t a member of the Government Marc , in fact the last thing he wants is to be in Government which would mean he would have to take responsibility , make decisions etc , no Gerry and his gang want to sit on the fence and whinge
True enough Mike. ..I still think it’s wrong to exclude a leader of a political which has gotten a decent enough share of votes in this so called democracy
Its amazing the people who didn’t vote for sinn vein want them to go into government, it was simple they had enough candidates, if you wanted them in government you should have voted for them. Instead the peopleVoted for like minded right wing parties, it would be undemocratic to try and force left wing policies of fairness and justice against the will of the majority.
Why did they invite him in the first place( which they did) . Shows a complete lack of manners on their part. Imagine inviting someone to your house and then refusing them entry. Weird.
He stated early in counting SF would be staying in opposition, and it’s called negotiating if you’ve an interest in being part of Govt, but it’s all the long plan for SF, why they bother with a manifesto when all they want is to shout from the sidelines
Very embarrassing for Ireland that the leader of one of the largest political parties both North and South of the border unable to gain access to a trans Atlantic function.
Reminds me of the time the doorman on a Kilkenny hotel didn’t recognise Bono and refused him access to a gig.
Why?
Gerry Adams is an elected representative in this republic.
Sinn Fein have strong links with Irish Americans, a strong base of support there.
What….not liking the cut of someone’s jib is a valid reason for exclusion is it?
It’s an insult to every citizen on this island.
Well said sam unfortunately some of the haters of that party on here are probably getting their July 14th outfits ready or working out how to sell more distressed nama property to vulture funds
Jane. ..for the record I don’t like to see the gardai or anyone else murdered. However the filth in power here for the past years had committed economic terrorism against the poorest members of our society while padding their mates bank accounts. How many murders are they responsible for thru suicide?
“for the record I don’t like to see the Gardai or anyone else murdered”
Well thank goodness for that. When you have to point this out, you are already losing.
And trying to draw comparison between people who were deliberately murdered and those committed suicide due to financial hardship is a despicable insult to the bereaved of both sets of deceased. Using personal tragedies to try to justify our own warped bigotry is disgusting.
Eel….you know nothing about me so keep your ignorant dumb comments to yourself. ..ignoring the wilful acts of a corrupt government makes clowns like you complicit in other types of deaths regardless of how much you deny or ignore it. …now go back to your traitor clowns
I’m not Insulted Sam, I’m a citizen , chill the bean there with the sweeping statements . Now I did feel insulted that he ever got in the door in the first place, it’s ok , I’m grand now.
Eel I’m not the one who brought up the subject in first place. ..and the only one who seems to be trying to justify anything is you. ..the subject at hand is the exclusion if a public figure from a celebration of Irish themes
Actually Marc I think it’s bang out of order that any person be invited specifically for an event and then be left standing outside while administrators fluster.
The only Irish person invited by the Mandela family to the private vigil prior to Nelson Mandela’s state funeral, not good enough for the white house. The fools, the fools.
With all due respect Justin, it was Nelson Mandela who wanted his friend Gerry Adams at his funeral. The same Nelson Mandela who supported the armed struggle against British occupation in the north. Glad you agree that he was a great man though.
Gerry Adams has just accused the first African-American president of sending him to the “back of the bus”. Yep I’m pretty sure now……..Gerry Adams is a ****ing idiot
Not even sending HIM! Sending Sinn Fein, despite his 2 amigos getting their snouts in the White House trough. Gerry believes he IS Sinn Fein and that’s the party’s problem. The man’s ego knows no bounds.
Ahh poor Gerry left waiting, he has left a lot of families wait for news of where there loved ones are buried, murdered by members of Gerrys very own IRA.
What about the Taoiseach of this Country, trying so hard to be funny but jaysus you can take the man out of the bog but you cant take the bog out of the man. Please do not under any circumstances give him another as Taoiseach.
I wouldn’t let Gerry Adams into my house.
Or Donald Trump.
I have standards.
(There is no law which protects riff-raff Gerry Adams from being told to F*** off.)
Who in there right mind would want to visit the White House…..the US shadow government is one of the most vile disgusting regimes on the planet….much more to do at home Gerry…..let Enda be the poodle getting his head rubbed.
Fair play to the Yanks, best news I’ve heard in ages, shame we couldn’t do likewise in this country, and send this lying, nauseating person back to Belfast where he belongs.
It is disrespectful and an insult to him, those who accompanied him and the people of Ireland. They let a janitor Taoiseach, an acknowleged liar, who would rather not come home, in.
It’s a sad thing to see all those who want and demand Adams puts SF in government, those who call for his removal as leader of SF are always those of other parties. SF are not fools, Both FF and FG would love to see them as mudguards. They’ll have to take responsibility for their own decisions now. And they will destroy each other.
Judging by the photo his top row of teeth are his Sinn Fein pearlies: incredibly white and so pure and untarnished it’s hard to believe they belong to Gerry.
The bottom row are crooked and stained, his IRA gnashers.
Hopefully he has time to drop in to an expensive orthodontist while he is in the US. They have the best healthcare in the world if you can afford it, like Gerry can.
They let Kenny in, the janitor Taoiseach, who then went on to embarrass himself and the country with his “Bejaysus” paddywhackery. The man’s an total idiot and snivelling liar.
its Gerry’s connection to Donald Trump when he was fund-raising in New York back in the day was the reason for this, portray Gerry as a terrorist, then say Donald Trump was in cahoots..
I had forgotten about that. The AP report provides an interesting snapshot of a time when IRA murders were winding down and the rhetoric of leaders was moving to compromise. Would be very interesting to younger people who may feel removed from recent history.
He might not represent you Tony as an individual, but he does represent the ten’s of thousands of Irish citizens who voted for the party he is the leader of. And as such should have been treated with a bit more respect. And so should we as citizens of a democratic society
What about hillary clinton de-stabilizing lybia removing ghadaffi and isis filling the vacuum taking oil field in Sirte? Iraq2? And unsuccessfully trying 2 pull same **it in syria?
I have no doubt some low level functionary f***ed up! No conspiracy. No sinister meanings. Heads will roll in the security staff but we’ll never hear about it. Tempest in a teacup.
Ah, hilarious. Poor oul Jurry. To be fair, when you’re part of a terrorist organisation you have to expect these hiccups from time to time. The spluttering indignation and the conspiracy theories make it even funnier. ‘Sorry bud, not tonight’.
USA The WAR mONGERING SHOWER OF TERROROIST THEMSELVES THEY ARE NO BETTER THAN THE REST, NO OFFENCE I AM NOT A SHINNER SUPPORTER BUT TO DISRESPECT ANOTHER PERSON FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY AFTER BEING INVITED TO THEIR COUNTRY BY INVITATION IS COMMON BY USA I AM NOT SURPRISED GIVEN KENNY AND OBAMA SPOKE OF THE SF ELECTION VICTORY TAKING UP FG AND LB SEATS AND THE TTTIP OF THE ICE BURG ON TTIP THAT SF ARE AGAINST DIDN’T GO DOWN TO WELL WITH USA THE USA ARE AFRAID OF GERRY ADAMS ESPECIALLY FBI AND PRIVATE SECURITY, WELL THE SECURITY ERROR AND USA ONLY LET THEMSELVES DOWN AND NOT SURPRISING REALLY GIVING US REPUTATION ON WAR CRIMES THEMSELVES ILLEGALLY ENTERING COUNTRIES IN A WAR WITHOUT LEGAL CAUSES ONLY ON FALSE PRETENCES I WOULD SAY THEY ARE IN FACT THE WORSE TERROROIST OF ALL USA WAR CRIMES IS MUCH HIGHER THAN SF IRA, like I SAID I AM NO SF SUPPORTER BUT USA LET THEMSELVES DOWN IN SHAME LOWERING THEMSELVES LOATH
The Americans stand together and let no one walk on them .The Irish fight, scourge each other and leave one outside the door. Kenny and his little band of green men might have been a little intoxicated from taxpayer funded tipplers .The bejasus brigade and Darby O Gills,s on the loose again.
I read this story, and TBH after seeing the effects of another branch of the US security admin, it doesn’t surprise me. Nowhere’s safe from the paperwork shuffle. Nothing malicious about it, just names on lists with nothing beside them to give extenuating circumstances.
(Disclaimer: I have never read nor even sought any US govt “lists” either leaked or otherwise, nor have I knowledge of any procedures of any branch of the US govt for keeping them. Any dealings I have had would have been in a previous occupation.)
I’m not trying to be smartarse with those disclaimers either, they’re true! I’ve no interest! I just don’t want to be barred from checking in the night before any flight to the US in the future…
I’m not a SF fan, and I never agreed with IRA tactics in NI. But this is a real and personal “Fcuk you” to Adams, who was fairly and squarely elected.
However, it begs the question – who compiled the list of suggested Invitees? Was it the “department of the Taoiseach” ? Was Mary Lou admitted without any hassle ? This stinks of a “clerical error” on the Irish side if you ask me.
The planning had to boil down to something as simple as this …
An official email from Obama’s office to Kenny’s office the week before saying ” who exactly is coming, please supply a list ?” Then an official email in reply from Kenny’s office containing ” a list of names”
… Anyone got a better explanation ?
