INDONESIA WILL BEGIN chemically castrating convicted paedophiles in an effort to combat child sex abuse, an official said, after a string of high-profile attacks.
“(It) will make people think a thousand times before committing such crimes,” Attorney-General Muhammad Prasetyo said late Tuesday after the move was agreed at a cabinet meeting led by President Joko Widodo.
“This crime is extraordinary and there have been so many victims.”
He said the punishment would be authorised soon through a presidential directive, which means it will automatically become law without parliament having to vote on it.
It would be carried out by injecting paedophiles with female hormones, he said.
Indonesia joins a small group of places that use chemical castration against child sex offenders, including Poland and some states in the US. In 2011, South Korea became the first Asian country to legalise the punishment.
Indonesia has been shocked by a series of high-profile child sex attacks. The most recent case was the kidnap, rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl.
Her body was discovered stuffed in a cardboard box in the capital Jakarta earlier this month, and an autopsy revealed that she had been repeatedly sexually assaulted.
Under current laws, child sex abuse is punishable by 15 years in jail but in many cases paedophiles have been handed short sentences.
I can’t say I agree with corporal or capital punishment but it saves a child then I think in this case it’s a good idea.

The only thing I’d add is maybe only apply this punishment to re-offenders. The courts can sometimes make mistakes so doing such a permanent thing to an innocent man is counter productive. That’s why I’m generally against capital punishment.
It’s not permanent, it could also be considered a cure.
It won’t make anyone think twice before committing these heinous crimes, and it’s worrying to read that some official is stupid enough to think it will. Much longer sentences to protect society and research into the source of the attitudes behind these kind of attacks.

This is a form of illness that we can neither understand or cure. As such protecting other children from these people is the primary objective.
I think it will be understood, and effective treatment found in years to come. Not in the form of a pill, but through a de-stigmatised acceptance of it by broader society allowing us to actually treat iot without inactive paedophiles being in fear of their lives.
What paedophile, one that has NEVER, and would NEVER want to hurt a child in any way, would voluntarily come forward and seek treatment in this climate?
Suppose in a few years we will understand and empathise with rapists and murderers for their ‘illness’ too. Alan get real.
I am “getting real”. A pedophile that has not harmed a child is guilty of no crime except thought crimes. I’m talking about making it acceptable for the to come forward and get treatment BEFORE they do anything.
@ Alan there was a guy (can’t remember his name) but he did come forward and say that while he has the urges he knows it’s wrong so has never acted on them. He got a lot of support.
Yes, channel 4 did a documentary on him. It was a very brave thing for him to do. He was later beaten up.
So Alan would you say Pedophiles that have never personally harmed a child but still seek out and look at child pornography, that they are not causing any harm?

I have 2 kids and the thoughts of someone doing that to them turns my stomach however I respect the guy for fighting his urges and knowing how wrong it is. Alan you are 100% correct but unfortunately people do not want to look at science, or facts. They would rather go with their emotional urges to lynch mob and take revenge. Ironic as this is what they are accusing the people of to which their hate is directed!
As someone who was horrifically abused when I was 5 years old, I honestly don’t know how I feel about this. An abuser is an abuser. How female hormones will change this, I don’t know. However, I, personally, would feel no retribution knowing that my abuser was being involuntarily injected with hormones.

Not all child abusers are pedophiles. plenty of child abusers are also attracted to other adults.
I’m going to take a mad guess here Alan, and presume that the man who repeatedly raped me when I was 5 years old was, in fact, a paedophile.
According to research only a minority of child abusers are actual pedophiles. A 2006 study found that 35% of its sample of child molesters were pedophilic.
A pedophile is someone whose primary or sole attraction is to prepubescent kids. Under 11′s, and prepubescent.
Does it really matter what their ‘label’ is? They are individuals that r@pe and abuse kids. I don’t think semantics are the main issue here. I couldn’t care less what the legal system calls the ‘man’ who repeatedly assaulted me.
I don’t want to speak for Alan but is his point that if some of these abusers/rapists are not pursuing sexual things but other f’ed up desires and horrific actions then chemical castration might make people think they’re “made” safe when in fact it changes nothing? Don’t want to speak for him but it looks like he was badly talking about that.

Simple, when you abuse a child you should have no rights and idiots saying it’s an illness should join them along with the people that think chemical castration is a step to far. It should be euthanasia after they have been castrated then hang, draw and quarter them
It’s hard wired into people, like homosexuality people don’t have a choice. It’s a tricky one, if a person is attracted to a child then provided they don’t act on it they’ve not actually committed a crime. So i think prevention is better than cure.
So would you also like to kill the many pedophiles (probably vast majority) that have never, and never would touch a child without trial? What of the ones that want help right now, that are in that situation, but are too terrified to come forward to seek help in case someone likes you crosses their path? Should we keep them locked up for “thought crimes” and hidden away until they DO actually go and molest a child?

Yes I would euthanise them all even if they have never abused a child directly because the vast majority indirectly abuse children by viewing child pornography and thus enticing others to commit the crime for their own ends. I’m always wary of people that go over the top in their declarations of anti paedophilia. They are constantly trying to outdo themselves with grotesque punishments as if to say, “I’m definitely not a paedo”. The human mind is a funny thing how it can be equally repulsed and excited by the same thoughts.

Like I said, if they don’t act on it including watching porn they’ve not committed a crime. The choice is either find a way for people that find children attractive and have the urge to abuse them to come forward and seek help before they act on it or punish them after they attack a child. What would prefer?

I can’t see this working. Paedophiles can still view sell child pornography and abuse children in other ways which I would rather not even imagine. It is there warped thinking to be sexually attracted to a child which is so heinous.that thinking won’t change because of castration. It is better for society if they stay in jail. Once a paedophile always a paedophile. Throw away the key as far as I’m concerned.
I think somewhere along the line commentators missed the point, this punishment is for people convicted of abusing children – not just thinking about it or even watching it. In that case, yes, please go ahead and do what ever is necessary to protect other children from these people guilty of a crime

it’s a step forward but this only stops the from raping , it doesn’t stop what they’re thinking and it doesn’t stop them from abusing in other ways .
Where chemical castration is used it tends to be voluntarily. Article doesn’t say if that’s the case here, but considering it’s Indonesia it likely isn’t. When used in conjunction with those that wish to avail of it, it has been shown to be very effective.
And a controversial US study a number of years ago, found that it caused lots of problems as the paedophiles themselves had no sexual release through regular masturbation and actually got worse.
I know one should agree with this but unless it’s voluntary I think it’s a rather sinister road to go down

We should setup some kind of amnest where paedos can come and get help. Then when they are all registered we can gas the lot of them in a big hall. Their bodies should be dragged through towns and schools where children are encouraged to throw bricks at them. I hate paedoephiles, I do.

Indonesia is a Muslim sharia law state. All Muslims are required to emulate their prophet Mohammed. Mohammed was married to Aisha when she was just 6 yrs.of age. It is recorded that in Islamic sacred text that the Marriage was consummated when she was just 9yrs.old.
