Irish lead the world for not tolerating bad mobile phone manners

“Turn that off – NOW”

THE IRISH HAVE the highest standards in the world when it comes to mobile device manners on holiday, according to a study published today.

The 2014 Expedia/Egencia Mobile Index found that Irish travelers had no patience for loud phone calls, taking food photos, and playing games without headphones.

We have higher standards of mobile manners than any of the 25 other countries in the survey, which involved 8,552 respondents from Europe, North America, South America and the Asia-Pacific region.

The worst crime of all, apparently, is making calls on speakerphone, which 65% of us find offensive (as opposed to just 53% worldwide).

  • Playing music/games/videos without headphones – 58% (vs 47% worldwide)
  • Taking photos or videos of strangers – 53%
  • Making phone calls in a restaurant – 50% (vs 36% worldwide)
  • Sending emails or texts in the theatre or cinema – 36%
  • Video calls/Skype/FaceTime in public – 35%
  • Loud notification tones – 33%
  • Taking pictures of your food – 26%

Despite this aversion to the deadliest sins of modern technology, the Irish are also slaves to their devices, the survey found.

Some 90% of us bring at least one mobile device (smartphone, tablet, e-reader, laptop or smartwatch) when we go travelling.

Perhaps predictably, that number rises to 98% among those on business trips.

More than three quarters of us (77%) say our mobile phones are “critical or very important” to our daily lives while on holidays.
