Louvre to reopen tomorrow after staff walkout over pickpocket problem ends

Museum management had backed the workers, saying a greater police presence is needed to stop pickpocketing.

Updated 6.12pm

PARIS’S LOUVRE museum will reopen tomorrow having closed earlier today due to a walkout by some staff in protest at a growing number of increasingly aggressive pickpockets, including children, targeting both workers and tourists, a union said.

The museum’s management said earlier it had already lodged a complaint with prosecutors in December 2012 and demanded a greater police presence.

“The museum will reopen tomorrow,” Christelle Guyader of the SUD union told AFP this evening, saying the walkout had ended after management agreed to lay out a series of measures aimed at reinforcing police presence around the building.

Earlier, about 100 staff gathered in front of the Ministry of Culture where a delegation was received.

Christelle Guyader of the SUD union had said staff had had enough of the situation.

“Sometimes they come to work afraid because they find themselves confronted with organised groups of pickpockets who are increasingly aggressive and which include children, who get into the museum free and even when taken in for questioning by police come back a few days later,” she said.

A timely warning ahead of the Wales game. Gatland gone, they will have a bounce from it and the new coach is bringing back people who never should have been dropped. Pride comes before a fall.

Leinster have used 54 players this season, that’s almost four different teams. I don’t think any other club could afford to pay so many players. Where are they getting all the money from?

@Max: 9 players on central contract and they use the Aviva Stadium which holds 60000, more than Musgrave Pk, Thomond and Sports ground combined, and the Aviva is in the biggest population centre in the country so no problem filling it!
