AS THE BODY of Nelson Mandela lies in state for the third and final day ahead of his funeral on Sunday, a more permanent tribute to the founding father of the ‘Rainbow Nation’ is raised in Pretoria.

The giant statue of the former South Africa president, referred to affectionately as Madiba, will stand in front of the Union buildings.

There are already a number of dedicated monuments to Mandela in his homeland including this statue at Nelson Mandela square in Sandton, Johannesburg:

And, of course, a bust of Mandela is watchful at the entrance to Robben Island ferry departure point at the V&A waterfront in Cape Town:

Is it just the perspective or are his arms impossibly long?

Mandela’s life was certainly the embodiment of the human spirit. His energy will uplift every corner of the globe which battles for equal rights for its citizens. Hopefully we may do his legacy justice by learning from his life’s work and struggles. I was compelled to pay homage to Nelson Mandela with my artwork by creating a portrait of the world leader In Memoriam at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2013/12/in-memoriam-nelson-mandela.html
