IRISH AMERICAN ACTRESS Maureen O’Hara has died at the age of 95.
O’Hara’s manager Johnny Nicoletti says the iconic actress died in her sleep at her home in Boise, Idaho this morning.
Her family have since confirmed the news of her death.
“It is with a sad heart that we share the news that Maureen O’Hara passed away today in her sleep of natural causes,” read the a statement from the FitzSimons family.
“Maureen was our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family as they celebrated her life listening to music from her favourite movie, The Quiet Man.”
The Dublin-born actress’ career began in the 1930s, making her debut The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Her prolific career included roles in The Quiet Man and Miracle on 34th Street, often appearing alongside John Wayne.
During her movie heyday, she became known as the Queen of Technicolor because of the camera’s love affair with her vivid hair, pale complexion and fiery nature.
The actress played little Natalie Wood’s mother in the Christmas classic, Miracle on 34th Street.
President Michael D. Higgins is currently on an official visit to the United States and the former Arts Minister has described O’Hara as “an outstanding and versatile actress”.
“I have learned with great sadness of the death of the actress Maureen O’Hara,” the President said this eveing.
“She will be remembered as an outstanding and versatile actress, whose work especially in film, will endure for many years to come.”
“She received her early training at the Abbey Theatre, and went on to become an artist whose talents were recognised and appreciated all around the world. I especially remember with affection her recent visit to Áras an Uachtaráin, when we discussed among other things her great love of Ireland and her strong family links to Shamrock Rovers.”
O’Hara was born in Ranelagh as Maureen FitzSimons in 1920. Her mother was a well-known opera singer and her father was involved with Shamrock Rovers and other local football teams.
She’s survived by her daughter Bronwyn FitzSimons who lives in Ireland and is also an actress.

There are real problems in the world, and yet some people are so wrapped up in themselves that they invent an issue like being trapped in the wrong gender. It’s ridiculous that so much media attention is focused on this in order to show how liberal they are. A nonsense of a problem.

The signs on toilet doors do not depict genitals – they depict gender presentation. So when I go to the loo wearing a dress, the signs make it pretty clear which loo I should use.
A tiny minority of the population gets a daily mention on the journal ,while families are relying on lay litigants to fight for their homes in every court in ireland and don’t get a mention.
Why don’t you start by writing an article on lay litigants or whatever your issue is (in the same way Deirdre here has written an article) and submit it to The Journal for consideration.

Transgender issues are so hot right now.
The problem lies in the brain not the body, if a woman has all the in inards of a woman yet still believes she is a male, the problem lies in her head.
Mind you for that person it is still a big problem and one I am glad I don’t have!
Perhaps one day a bit of minor surgery will solve the situation or perhaps prevent it happening earlier, in the womb, who knows!
Bill, to undergo the medical portion of transition a transgender person has to be assessed by both psychologists and psychiatrists first. Do you REALLY think that you know better than the medical experts in the field?

Just to take you up on something you mentioned in your article. You say that – post-operatively my body stops producing that dreadful hormone called testosterone. Do you take testosterone supplements along with oestrogen as testosterone is a hormone that is vital to a woman’s health just as much as it is to a man.

I should have said that my body stops producing testosterone in the quantities it used to.
My body still produces testosterone – but in the same sort of quantities any woman’s body does. I don’t need supplements.

The estrogen I take has massively decreased my muscle mass – I’ve lost a lot of my strength – which is why I can fairly compete as female.

The medical profession doesn’t give the kinds of treatments I’ve received unless you are transgender. They don’t create transgender people – they treat transgender people.
