Venezuela confirms Nicolas Maduro as president

It’s finally official after demands for recount: The acting president will succeed the late Hugo Chavez, beating his opponent by just over 1 per cent.

VENEZUELA’S ELECTORAL AUTHORITIES have confirmed acting President Nicolas Maduro as the winner of the weekend election to succeed Hugo Chavez, despite opposition demands for a recount.

National Electoral Council president Tibisay Lucena handed the certified results to Maduro after proclaiming him “president-elect of Venezuela” following the tight election against opposition leader Henrique Capriles.

Lucena gave final figures for the vote, and said Maduro won with 50.75 per cent of the vote compared to 48.97 per cent for Capriles — a difference of around 265,000 votes.

As the council made the announcement, Capriles supporters banged pots and pans outside their windows in an eastern neighborhood of Caracas as a form of protest.

The US are not happy with this result, but definitely good day for Venezuela and democracy.

Some result considering what resources the C.I.A and the U.S government would have thrown at this one. Imagine the margin of victory without that interference.

If you guys knew anything about what’s really going on in Venezuela at the moment you would not be making stupid comments like “Victory” or “Venezuela free”, or talking about “CIA involvement”, etc. Please show some respect for the 50+% that voted for an alternative to communism and are seeing their rights annihilated by a puppet of the Cuban regime. Chavez is dead and his revolution was a failure. Now the vultures that he left in power are doing everything to stay there so that they are not brought to justice for their crimes against the people that once believed in Chavez. But if you think it’s so “cool” then move to Caracas for a while and see how you get on. Otherwise shut up.

Also, to whoever wrote this article: “As the council made the announcement, Capriles supporters banged pots and pans outside their windows in an eastern neighborhood of Caracas as a form of protest.” Protests are nationwide and there are people in the streets being shot by the military. It’s 50% of a 20 million people country that voted against Maduro!!
