Gardaí believe discovery of man's body in County Cork linked to a poisoning incident

The man’s body was discovered at an apartment in Broomfield West shortly after 4pm yesterday – a gravely ill woman was also found at the scene.

LAST UPDATE | 25 Feb

INVESTIGATORS NOW BELIEVE that the discovery of the body of a man and a critically ill woman at a house in County Cork is linked to a poisoning incident.

The body of the man – understood to be a Polish national in his 60s – was found at an apartment in Broomfield West, Midleton shortly after 4pm.

A woman, believed to be his wife, was treated at the scene before being brought by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

It is understood that the couple may have become ill after drinking homemade spirits – gardaí believe the incident may have been accidental.

Empty containers, which were found in the apartment, will be analysed in a bid to establish what the man and woman drank.

The scene remains preserved for forensic examination.

A post-mortem examination was completed today, and gardaí are preparing a file for the Coroner’s Court.

Gardaí are currently treating the man’s death as unexplained, but it is believed that foul play was not a factor in the case.

With reporting from Olivia Kelleher and Niall O’Connor.
