Here are some of the winners of the Press Photographer of the Year awards

Independent News and Media’s Mark Condren picked up the top honour this evening.

THE PRESS PHOTOGRAPHER of the Year awards were presented at a ceremony in Dublin this evening.

The awards were presented across nine categories; news, daily life & people, nature & the environment, politics, sports action, sports feature, portrait, art & entertainment and reportage, alongside a dedicated award for multimedia.

The top honour, Press Photographer of the Year, was picked up by Independent News and Media’s Mark Condren, who the judges said showed originality and a willingness “to look at things from a different perspective”.

Here’s a look at some of the highlights from the awards:

@Charlie: it’s composed well with a good set of colours and the subject matter creates intrigue.

The difficulty I have looking at photos nowadays is how much photoshopping is involved. I know in the old days of paper and chemicals it was possible to modify/edit the original but that was skill nothing like photoshop. I like some of the photos above , the duck the swimmer but unfortunately others I don’t. But that’s only my opinion and everyone has and is entitled to one.

@Brendan Cullen: that would count as image manipulation. Changing the hue or the colour to make it seem more dramatic is manipulative. Yeah it looks better but it’s not true to the original photo.

@Jimmy Fagan: TBF Most images need a touch up because it’s rare to have not only good subject matter, timing and lighting conditions all at the same time. I agree the only manipulation allowed should colour balancing. It can make an image pop.
