TWO RUSSIAN MILITARY aircraft entered Irish-controlled airspace again.
The Irish Aviation Authority confirmed that the aircraft entered international airspace that is controlled by them.
The IAA confirmed that it monitored the activity of two Russian military aircraft from approximately 3pm to 7pm yesterday.
“The aircraft did not enter Irish sovereign airspace at any time.”
The IAA were not informed in advance. The aircraft operated in North Atlantic airspace and in airspace under the control of the IAA.The aircraft operated within 25 nautical miles of the Irish coast.Irish controlled airspace extends 256 nautical miles off the west coast of Ireland. Irish sovereign airspace extends 12 nautical miles off the Irish coast.
The IAA said the flight posed no safety threat to civil aviation on this occasion.
It is understood that the two aircraft were the same bombers that flew past the Cornwall coast in the UK.
British Forces scrambled its fighter jets to escort the two Russian Bear bombers away from the Cornwall coast.
Footage of of the incident was reportedly shown on Russian television:
UK Prime Minister David Cameron said he suspected that Russia was “trying to make a point” and that he would not dignify it with a response.
This is not the first time Russian aircraft has flown by Ireland.
Russian jets came close to the Irish coastline only last month. While the jets did not enter Irish airspace, they did enter an area controlled by the Irish Aviation Authority.
Speaking about the episode, Minister for Defence Simon Coveney said the government had “expressed real concern” to the Russian authorities.
He said the Russians were told that it was “not acceptable”.
It’s not an acceptable situation and we have let that be known to the Russian authorities and we hope it won’t be happening again.
If Russia keeps this up , we may send in big joe Joyce to sort them out !!

It’s embarrassing we have no proper aircraft of our own to intercept we’d be screwed if these bear bombers were fully loaded .i know the chances are slim to none they’d drop anything but the fact we rely on others for protection is sad .switzerland is neutral and have superior air power in their arsenal.

@ Jamie….its not so long we had the very same Russians refueling at Shannon, and the Lybian Military were training their people in air traffic control.
Funny the old lefties (some of whom have nice big government pensions ) never had a peace camp in Shannon (genuine) when asylum seekers were being dragged back on board Aeroflot planes to a very uncertain fate in USSR or the peoples paradise of Cuba.

I don’t suppose that old dear or her buddies (who would have been a sprightly woman ) broken in and damaged the nose of Russian or other military planes that were parked at the airport on a very regular basis. (Bumping into a few burley Russians might not have been good for the health she might have got a free one way flight to the Lubyanka!!)

But Kiev has sent aircraft bombers and tanks and bombed civilian targets including schools in eastern ukraine. Women and children have been blown to bits while in their own homes. Do you really support this? Would you really support Scottish seperatists being mass murdered because they wanted to seperate? Think about it, these are ordinary people bring murdered by their own Government in the Ukraine.

I could be wrong but I can’t see any strategic need or benefit that having advanced jet fighters would bring. Aerial combat is not a priority for the air force i’d imagine. A case could be made for expanding the capabilities of the though.

Actually, guaranteeing the security of our airspace is supposed to be the primary role of the Air Corps. They’re simply not equipped for their primary role despite having the equipment to support their secondary roles like S&R.
Irelands tactical role is that of logistics support for the US military if they were ever called for the defence of Europe and the north Atlantic.

It’s time we take the role of the Irish Air Corps seriously. At least 6 jets like we had in the 60s to the 90s. With a second base on the West Coast.
I’m not disagreeing but 6 modern European jet fighters, Rafale/Typhoon/Gripen, would cost €450-€600 million. Even if Ireland just bought jet trainers it would be €120-150 million. Can you imagine the reaction from the opposition politicians and the public if the government announced that level of spending?
Even the much needed purchase of the new OPV’s for the Navy was criticised by some.

I’m not disagreeing with the principle of higher defence spending. Countries like Finland and Portugal that have similar GDP to Ireland manage to have modern air forces but I just don’t think it would be politically possible.
I just don’t see the point. We would never be able to shoot anyone down because it would an act of war. What are 6 jets going to do in that situation? Puppies shouldn’t be messing with big dogs. Nobody will ever threaten Ireland just by way of the fact that we couldn’t defend ourselves. That’s well established. If they did it would never be tolerated internationally. That is the safest situation a country of our size can ever be in.
Send up both governmental jets with the pilots shaking they’re fists, and throwing dirty looks at the Russian pilots.

Had they crossed into UK airspace fair enough but they didn’t so what’s the big deal.
They are entering Airspace controlled by specific air traffic centres without notifying them and in most cases with their transponders turned off so other aircraft can not see them! Increasing the risk of collisions etc
It does not state that in the article that they turned off transponders this time. It does state tho that the plane posed no risk.

You are right, nothing to unduly worry about as its not as if they supplied a Buk surface – to – air missile to some rebels and accidentally shot down a commercial passenger plane.

Transponders off is highly dangerous there was already a close call between a su fighter and civilian jet in Europe late last year.
One would think after shooting down mh 17 they would be trying to limit international damage.

Glen Russian aircraft flying with transponders turned off is unnecessarily dangerous and a risk to commercial flights. It is reckless in the extreme. What do want – an air crash before you consider this behaviour dangerous?
It is no illegal and they are allowed to do it. Maybe if we ask them nicely to inform us when they are having military flights in international airspace they might agree if we ask NATO to do the same when they fly international airspace near Russian airspace.

Those euro fighters have a fire and forget missile system so if it really came down to it the slow Russian bombers wouldn’t get anywhere near thier targets…its just military posturing from both sides.

Many scientists in Germany and in other countries believe that this plane was shot down in Ukraine and was done by government forces, if Russia or the rebels did it they wouldn’t have hushed it up but would have never shut up about it. Gerard I think you’re the one who may have to read it again. They were in international airspace that is controlled by ireland but were not in Irish sovereign airspace. There is nothing we can do about it, not that we could do anything even if they did enter Irish sovereign airspace.

That U2 (nato/US) spy plane that was shot down over Russia in 1960 did that have it’s transponder turned on. I don’t think so and if it makes a plane invisible then how did they know they were there in the first place. Both planes were tracked leaving Russian airspace and tracked across western Europe. That’s why Nato spent all that money on those radar stations and if they didn’t bother to inform civilian air traffic control then also shame on them as well if there was an accident.

They won’t be needing the supplies now there is a ceasefire. They war is over and the Ukrainian army have retreated, the only place they will be marching is on Kiev.

This is now ceasefire number 3, I sincerely doubt it means the war is over by a long shot.

This plane was just inside the international zone and could have been a threat. Since the twin towers, 9/11, a plane should be identifiable and not get the RAF in emergency defence mode!

we dont have missiles capable of hitting these aircraft. they are short range air to surface missiles. what we should do is locate and “paint” them with the missiles radar unit and that would set off the radar warning in the cockpit , they might respond to air traffic control then.
We should ask our German “allies” what we should do.

Irish controlled airspace is international airspace that ireland has responsibilty for shepherding aircraft through safely. hard to achieve when youve a group of feckless Russian nuclear bombers cutting transversely across flight corridors with transponders off and no way to identify them, intercept them, inform air traffic control of whats out their, its height speed and location and then shadow them out of irish controlled airspace.
No country owns international airspace they are responsible for their aircraft in it, so why deny other countries the use of International airspace or is this just a change from another Russian Sub found in Sweden that turns out to be light reflected from house windows onto the surface of water?

The way to identify them is radar, they are not like British or American subs sinking trawlers are they???
i said irish controlled airspace, not irish sovereign airspace. I understand that they are two distinctly different things. we cannot tell what aircraft something is, merely that there is a non responsive aircraft vectoring through irish controlled international airspace which is not identifying itself nor making itself visibile to other aircraft which may be in its vicinity thus increasing the chances of a mid air incident. its ignorant and down right disgraceful and shows a lack of respect for the lives of thousands of innocent civilians using that airspace. Ireland has a responsibility to police that area of international airspace for which it is expected to control. how can you control local international airspace if you have no method to get into it in a hurry and quickly identify who the culprit is? common sense would suggest a sovereign state should have this capability.
The U.S. Military does the same thing, the British and U.S. subs do the very same thing in our waters and the U.S. has used Shannon now as many believe for rendition.
