Strikes begin at Roadstone quarries over "major" pay cuts

Siptu members at 20 quarries began strike action earlier today.

SIPTU WORKERS AT more than a dozen Roadstone Woods Ltd facilities and quarries have begun strike action.

The industrial action began at midday today, and follows “major cuts to workers’ wages”.

Talks on the issue broke down over the weekend.

“Over the last number of months both SIPTU and the TEEU have engaged in negotiations with the management of Roadstone Woods Ltd in relation to cost reductions,” Siptu organiser Davy Lane said in a statement this evening.

He claimed that reductions to the payroll cost will be €10 million over the next five years, on top of €6 million in cuts in 2012.

“The Board of Cement Roadstone Holdings [CRH] are setting cost reduction targets for its companies, which are inflicting financial hardship on workers, while at the same time the company’s directors are accumulating massive bonuses as was reported at its AGM earlier this year,” Lane added.

CRH declined to comment at this time.

Meanwhile, the same union has requested a meeting Covidien management after the medical device manufacturer agreed to be acquired by Medtronic earlier today, citing concerns over the implications the move will have on workers.

There needs to be a concrete proposal on the table and all agreements set in stone thereafter!

Would you relax, its only a bit of banter. Is anything we say here going to affect the talks in any way? No. I wish the union and staff the best of luck with the talks.

During the good times road stone went around buying up every company breathing…. A lot of them went bust and put this company in a bind…..now they want the workers to suffer for a very poor management?

    Economic progress?
    1. The Celtic tiger cost workers their moral right to strike
    2. The recession put employees in their “rightful”place. I.e. thankful to still have a job
    3. Our government wholeheartedly serve neither employer or employee but exclusively their own interests.
    4. The trade union movement worship at the altar of greed and follow the Ahern/haughey gospel religiously
