Confirmed: The Socialist Party takes a second Dáil seat in Dublin West

Ruth Coppinger joins Joe Higgins in the Dáil as the strong left vote in Dublin West paid dividends for the Socialists.

Updated 9.35pm
https://vine.co/v/MwgXu7hQnrU

THE SOCIALIST PARTY has won its second Dáil seat in Dublin West after councillor Ruth Coppinger beat Fianna Fáil’s David McGuinness on the sixth count in Citywest tonight.

Coppinger joins party colleague Joe Higgins and replaces resigned independent TD Patrick Nulty who quit the Dáil earlier this year after sending inappropriate messages on social media.

Coppinger was elected on the sixth count with 12,334 votes. She failed to reach the quota of 14,478, but held off competition from Fianna Fáil’s McGuinness who got 9,237 votes.

McGuinness had pulled into second place, ahead of Sinn Féin’s Paul Donnelly after benefitting from the transfers of the eliminated Fine Gael candidate Eamonn Coghlan on the fourth count.

But the elimination of independent David Hall saw his transfers fall favourably for Coppinger who pulled over 600 votes ahead of McGuinness after the fifth count before benefitting from a sizeable transfer from the eliminated Sinn Féin candidate Donnelly on the sixth and final count.

McGuinness, who had been trailing in third place for much of the day, had gone into second place just 553 votes behind Socialist Party councillor Ruth Coppinger after the fourth count.

VINE: David Hall was eliminated after the fourth count in Citywest this evening.

Speaking after her election just after 9pm tonight, Coppinger said: “We’re just delighted that we kept this seat for the left and for socialism.”

Hugh O'Connell / YouTube

Earlier, upon arriving in Citywest, Coppinger said that voters’ switch to left-leaning parties in the constituency was “somewhat inevitable if you consider the level of anger, the level of disillusionment with the establishment parties”.

She said: “So, parties such as the Socialist Party, who are anti-austerity and parties who are critiques of austerity, like Sinn Féin, who have a much bigger apparatus in the Dáil in terms of 14 TDs, would be seen as a vehicle to express a protest.”

Speaking earlier in the day, Sinn Féin’s Donnelly said it was “a fantastic result” for the party and “the manifestation” of the work his party has put in across the constituency over the last four years.

It’s been a terrible day for Labour whose candidate Loraine Mulligan has polled just over 1,500 first preferences votes and was eliminated on the second count along with Green Party candidate Roderic O’Gorman.

Speaking at the count centre in Citywest earlier this afternoon, McGuinness said he was neither optimistic nor pessimistic but “in the middle”.

“From our point of view, we’re out in front of Fine Gael, the independents and the Green Party and that’s the place we needed to be in this to be in the shake up in the end,” he said.

His defeat in this by-election is his second after he ran unsuccessfully in the October 2011 by-election in Dublin West caused by the death of former minister Brian Lenihan.

Socialist Party TD, a sitting deputy in Dublin West, said earlier in the day that the party hoped for transfers to take the second seat in the constituency.
https://vine.co/v/MwveOUDO0An

Speaking before lunchtime, mortgage arrears campaigner Hall admitted he faced an “uphill battle” to win the seat. However, he confirmed his intention to run in the next general election and will be pleased with his fourth-placed finish.

But People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd-Barrett, who is supporting Coppinger, said earlier in the day that it was “looking good” for the Socialist after early tallies showed her in the lead:

I think it’s a shame that Labour are going so badly. Will we ever have a ‘normal’ political landscape in this country? I.e (left – right divide) instead of who fought for what side in a war everyone’s forgotten.

Hugh showing his true colours trying to spin this result as a success for SF. They have failed miserably by getting just 16% of the vote, despite widespread disillusion with the government. By the way Nicky mc fadden will easily take a seat in the other bye election for FG. You won’t see Hugh highlighting that though.

@john, it’s also a great Shame that labour lied to the public. They Asked the public to vote for them so they could be elected into government so that they could “keep an eye” on FG. The tesco style adverts had a list of six points, each stating what FG would implement and that it would hurt the people of Ireland. A vote for labour would be a vote for fairness. And what happened john? The electorate believed labour and now look at that six point advert, every single one of those promises are broken. That is why people are angry. Labour lied, they raised expectations that they were on “our side” and they sold out the very people who voted them in and have heaped austerity and hardship on the most vulnerable in society. Shame on them!

Even Newstalk are “spinning” it that way. Nice try. “Sinn Fein” up from 50 to 100+ in locals and zero to 2/3 in Europe! “Romping in Dublin” as they put in. The major factor is they have a huge grassroot membership now and will surely take the majority of the independents at the next general election. FF stagnant and FG and labour imploding. Roll on next GE.

I think commentators overly underline the civil war basis of the parties…. I’ve never met someone say they’re voting one way or the other based on which side of the civil war a party was on. Is this really how pple think? Defo understand there’s a habit of voting with a household voting one way for years that originally started along the civil war lines… But at this stage is the original reasoning lost in the mists of time and it’s more rote, apathetic voting is the problem and voters just don’t consider their vote deeply enough?

Both main parties have the same ideology and political leaning. All the that divides them is civil war politics. If they ever got together, and it could well happen, we will see corruption and cronyism on a scale never before seen in a Western democracy.

Actually Jebus I think the opposite would happen, at least eventually. A FF/FG coalition would, I think, lead to a right/left political divide which would lead to a stronger opposition. At the moment when people want a change of govt, they go from FF to FG. A coalition of those parties would remove that choice.

Dermot, I think your comment is probably the one with the most insight on here. If the two right-leaning parties would wake up and merge then the whole political landscape would change, not overnight but over a fairly short time. There would then be real choice without the massive blurring on the right. However, there is no black and white in politics; it’s all shades of grey as a look at the UK will confirm with the three main parties fighting over versions of the middle ground and UKIP er…….. having a ball sniping at everyone. I truly believe that the vast majority of people wish to see a balanced society, I.e. the middle ground, not the extremes at each end of the spectrum. That will take time to evolve in Ireland and, as we all know, growing up can be painful.

If Labour had stayed in opposition things would have been better? How do you work that out? We were in total crisis, 160 billion in debt, 18 months away from having to pay off a 40 billion promissory note, paying 6.75% interest and shedding 5000 jobs a week. We were about six months from total collapse. Due to Labour going into government with FG, most of that has changed (apart from the FF legacy debt that saw them rewarded yesterday) and the country is on the road to recovery. But don’t let that stand in the way of a good anti government rant.

Barry even if you were correct- that the country is on the road to recovery – how could you claim a success- forcing people who had nothing to do with the crisis to pay up is not imaginative, it’s not brave and it’s certainly not something Labour should be advertising – how dare they say that they have reduced our debt! At the same time they oversaw the biggest emigration drain for decades while they promised jobs.
They have not punished nor have they introduced any legislation to prevent the type of white collar crime that led to this crisis.
They sat by while a brave Garda was vilified and bullied by his colleagues for trying to improve standards in the force.
This is not just incompetent – this is showing contempt for ordinary citizens trying to do their best in their jobs – something possibly alien to these ministers.

On the whistleblowers, Dermot Ahern had that report and sat on it. Shatter at least had it investigated, but in the meantime made the mistake of believing the Commissioner and believing untruths, which he later had the decency to apologise for and correct the record of the house. Irish people have ALWAYS seen emigration as the first option in times of crisis, back as far as crofters going to Scotland for work in the 1840′s and even earlier, so blaming the present government for what is effectively a tradition is disingenuous.

You raise an interesting point that is worth debating but first you need to answer a basic question and that surrounds the purpose of yesterday’s elections.
My understanding is that we were supposed to be electing Members to the European Parliament and the County and City Councils. At no stage did I believe that the results of yesterday had anything to do with the sovereign decision of the people at the last General Election when we elected a Dail and Government.
Have I got my wires crossed or are you suggesting that yesterday’s results compels the Government to step down.

If it was up to me, I would ban socialist parties in this country. Its the welfare system that has us in the state we are in. With these same lazy people sitting at home all day looking up bigfoot conspiracies.

Get out and get a job……

Because they’ve leftist views and therefore aim to reduce disparity and promote egalitarianism, you brandish them all “commies” like some brain-dead American. They mightn’t be perfect but they’ll aid in creating a balance in Europe and Ireland. Some people see the word “socialist” and immediately think of soviet-style communism, whilst failing to forget that a lot of the main tenets of socialism are a lot more conducive to economic stability, environmental sustainability, and social equality so many some right-wing policies.
I think in a developed country like Ireland, left-wing parties will never evolve into parties reminiscent of failed communist parties of the past.

The thing is Eliot, people know what to expect from FG. a big chunk ( not everything of course) of what they have done, they said they were going to do before the general election. Labour on the other hand have been seen to renage on several pre election promises.
Plus, people voted for Labour expecting them to hold FG to account, to halt their worst excesses. They haven’t done this and they are paying the price.

The only reason to vote is if the vote represents power or change. I don’t think it does. I fervently believe that we deserve more from our democratic system than the few derisory tit-bits tossed from the carousel of the mighty, when they hop a few inches left or right. The lazily duplicitous servants of The City expect us to gratefully participate in what amounts to little more than a political hokey cokey where every four years we get to choose what colour tie the liar who leads us wears.

Fantastic result for Ruth and the Socialist Party in Dublin West and for the Anti Austerity Alliance and People Before Profit around the country. Glad to see people finally ditching the civil war gombeen politics as well as hammering the treacherous. labour party. This is a landmark result in Irish politics and signals the beginning of a real fightback against the failed austerity agenda. No wonder really when you have a despicable government who would rather take medical cards off terminally ill children while not even entertaining a wealth or financial transactions tax. The fact that Fine Gael are still the largest party in the country, the fact that Fianna Fail are beating Sinn Fein in Dublin West and the fact that here in Longford, Sinn Fein only got 4% of the vote in the first count in the Longford Electoral Area. No Socialists ran in Longford and Labour didn’t run anyone either, so not one Sinn Feiner has been elected to Longford County Council and nor have any Labour, meaning that Longford County Council will be made up entirely of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Independents :D
And that is only one small area, look how well Fianna Fail have done in Dublin and how well Fine Gael are doing in the rest of the country.

Ian, there is a quota to be reached when the papers have been counted and sorted, the quota is calculated by dividing the Total Valid Poll by one more than the number of seats to be filled, ignoring any remainder and then adding 1 vote. For example, in a Dáil election in a 4-seat constituency with 50,000 votes cast, 50,000 divided by 4 plus 1 (i.e., 5) = 10,000; 10,000 plus 1 is 10,001. This is the quota of votes to be reached by the candidates and it means that only 4 persons can be elected.

You indicate your first choice by writing 1 opposite your first choice and 2 opposite your second choice, 3 opposite your third choice and so on. You may stop marking your paper after 1 or any subsequent preference or you may go right down the ballot paper until a preference has been given to all candidates ending with the candidate of your lowest choice.

When you vote like this, you are instructing the Returning Officer to transfer your vote to the second choice candidate if your first choice is either elected with a surplus of votes over the quota or is eliminated. If your second choice is elected or eliminated, your vote may be transferred to your third choice and so on.

    Thanks james.

I was more asking why its not a straight race. Why was the system introduced? Is it fairer or not?

E.g if two seats were available and if candidate one gets 1000 number 1 preferences.
    Candidate two gets 700
    Candidate three gets 600.

If candidate a only needs 800 for election candidate 3 can be elected with transfers even though more people voted for candidate b as first preference.

The idea is that each vote goes to someone elected. That way your vote can go to count for a candidate you want. I might want candidate A, or B be happy with C or D but not want E or F. In first past the post I would give my vote to the person I think is most likely to beat E or F. That is what happens in many other countries. In PRSTB you can vote for a candidate you want even if they have no chance of being elected. You can then get your vote back and give it your next favourite.
