THUNDERS BAKERY CHAIN is closing after 56 years in business.
After a difficult few months of trading, the business announced that staying open is no longer sustainable and all eight locations in Dublin will be closing their doors.
Thunders said it will be in touch with customers soon as some pre-orders may not be fulfilled as a result of the closure. It had been advertising its services for Mother’s Day celebration on 30 March.
The Dublin-based bakery was first opened in Drumcondra in 1969 and sold the business to entrepreneur Sinéad Heffernan in 1997. It had stores in Drumcondra, Swords, Phibsborough, Clontarf, Dundrum, Rathmines, and Crumlin.
The bakery thanked its staff, customers and friends for their support.
This will be so so missed, was really great bakery and always busy too. Feel sad for the owners and staff

The cream doughnuts from the Kylemore and black forest gateaux from Thunders were massive, sadly both gone.
Probably rates which the SME just cannot afford .

@Karl Phillips: I looked up what the rates are on the one in drumcondra to see how much it works out as, it’s roughly 8,800 per annum on that shop.

Will be truly missed by those whom like real cakes, I never buy from the likes of Tescos they sell mostly in name only and not what the actual product should be.

Hard to believe they couldn’t just shut a few locations and drive the remaining one’s.

Or were there prices just to high these days because of the ever grown cost prices.

@Phillip Smyth: I thought that business was closed long ago, I see there now someone else, took it over l only remember the one in phisboro and Alan Thunder he was in a band, and actually they were excellent, I have often wondered what happened him nice bloke, and now this surprising.
One of the best bakeries. My 2 sisters and I always bought our cakes there. They will be missed. Cash flow problems always catch up on a business. So sad

The higher “lower” VAT rate is killing independent food businesses. The government can afford to give them some relief but chooses not to, time and time again.
