Want to prevent jet lag? Here's the simple way to do it

It might even involve MORE sleep. Lovely.

JET LAG IS ghastly. There you are, freshly returned from an amazing trip out foreign, trying to adjust to the idea of being back to ‘real life’, when it hits you.

You can’t sleep until 4am. Or you badly need to sleep at 4pm. Then you wake up at an ungodly hour, feeling like you’ll ever sleep again. You’re like a zombie stumbling through a fog.

Turns out there’s a fairly easy way to avoid jet lag, and it involves, well, science.

Have a look.

I travel a lot.. (Eg: Today I’m in Seattle for one day back to Dublin tomorrow. Two week time back to Atlanta then Australia and Singapore.. All work and short trips so dodging jet lag so I am active back home is important.. )

My tips: (mostly for returning from US)
If your trip is short (less than a week) Stay on Irish time.
In my opinion Jet lag only hits you travelling East..rather than west.

Avoid food on plane if on a red eye (overnight flight) (digesting grub at 4am irish time over the Atlantic doesn’t help your sleep pattern)
    Hydrate..
Then sleep as much as you can on the flight.
When you get home, try stay up until your normal bedtime.
Hey presto.. Ready for action the next day!
    Hope it helps!

Handy way of avoiding it if flying to the west coast! Stay up all night and drink!

He is flying to work I expect…not fun.

I fly to the US 40 times per year, 24 hours there each time. I stay on Irish time mostly.
Drink lots of water, don’t eat on the flight back home. Might stay up to 3-4am Irish time in the US.
If an early arrival home grab 4 hours kip then its like the day after a night out.

I f@cking knew someone would say that. Anyway I’m a pilot for a commercial airline and regularly do trans Atlantic crossings. Never once have I suffered from jet lag. I close my eyes the minute the plane is at the required altitude and I don’t wake up until at least 20 minutes before landing. Planes virtually fly themselves these days… Or so I’m told.

I have nice slim feet and ankles but the second I get on the plane they swell up like balloons. Worse still they stay swollen for the duration of the holiday and only get back to normal a few days after I come home. The only things that fit me while i am on hols are crocs.. Yes, big ugly crocs…
