Two arrested over attempted bombing of PSNI officer's family car

The two men, aged 34 and 25, were arrested in Belfast yesterday.

POLICE IN Northern Ireland investigating an attempted bombing of a PSNI officer’s car have arrested two men as part of their inquiries.

The men, who are aged 34 and 25, were arrested in Belfast yesterday.

The bomb was found underneath the police officer’s family car, outside his home on the Upper Newtownards Road in east Belfast, on Sunday lunchtime.

It was only spotted when the officer took a routine look under his car as he was about to bring his wife and children to a lunch.

PSNI assistant chief constable George Hamilton said the bomb had been “clearly intended to kill the police officer”, and said attacks on police officers – which were also “attacks on the entire community” – “cannot be allowed to continue.”

You do realize that questioning means just that or would you rather prefer that everyone brought in for questioning be locked up whether they were guilty or not?

Now Gavin, resist from naming the group they are in. Don’t give these clowns any headlines at all.

So what you are saying is that the Journal.ie should not report what goes on in the real world and in doing so lose readers to other sites. Some chance of that happening. If you are that worried about the big bad world and wish to be insulated from the news, good or bad then here is a site http://www.rte.ie/trte/news2day/ that should protect you from the harsh realities of life.

If we do not know what is happening and who is doing it then how can we fight back against them? If we do not know what happened or it is not reported as to who planted this bomb then how how do we voice our condemnation of it? If we want to say “No More” then who do we say it to if we don’t know who they are?

Thanks for that link Brian. The reason these clowns are doing this is to gain notice. I agree we need and want to know what is going on all I’m asking is that these cowards don’t make the headlines, the victims should make the headlines and should never be forgotten.

Martin, in her book “What Terrorists Want: Understanding the Enemy, Containing the Threat” http://www.amazon.com/What-Terrorists-Want-Understanding-Containing/dp/0812975448 Louise Richardson has a chapter entitled ” The 3 R’s: Revenge, Renown, Reaction”. All paramilitary groups seek renown for their operations and so claim responsibility for their attacks. They seek reaction form the people and government(s) so as to further their aims. What you are advocating is the censoring of information as to who carries out various attacks in NI. This does not work as we have seen with the Broadcasting ban. For an International example China censors all news from Tibet yet there is still a huge”Free Tibet” movement. What may have been possible in terms of limiting information 40 years ago is no longer true today, so in asking that the group responsible for this attack be censored on this site or any other is just not feasible.

In terms of reaction ask yourself this question. If we did not know who carried out the Omagh bombing would the RIRA have called their ceasefire? After all if we did not know who did it then where could the public outrage have been vented? It is up to society to judge the rights or wrongs of a groups actions and we need to be allowed to have all the information possible so as to make an informed decision. Only by being fully informed can we halt the rush to action and prevent aiding the terrorists aims.

It is easy to be populist and throw out lovely soundbites like Pagans comment above. “Throw away the key” . It might sound great in the “War on terror” and appease the baying mob but look at what they are saying. 2 men are arrested for questioning and Pagan makes the comment about throwing away the key. No due process, no court appearance, no provision of evidence, no trial, just summary justice for people who might in fact have nothing at all to do with this crime and may in fact just have been caught up in it out of sheer bad luck. Pagan basically is advocating internment without trial and we all know what happened the last time that was tried. Take one look at the amount of people agreeing with Pagan and the amount of people disagreeing with my comment and you will see what I mean by rushing to action without thinking things through.
