Two-year-old dies after being found in water on unfinished housing estate

The young child went missing around noon, before being discovered in water a short time later.

GARDAÍ IN ATHLONE are investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a young child in the Coosan area of the town this afternoon.

The boy, aged two-and-a-half, went missing around noon today. He was discovered in a pool of water on the estate at around 1pm.

He was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, where he was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí are treating the death as a tragic incident, and continue to investigate the circumstances.

RTÉ reports that Health and Safety Authority officials are also carrying out an inquiry into the death.
