U2 inducted into the Ivors Academy Fellowship as first-ever Irish songwriters

The Ivors Academy Fellowship has previously gone to Kate Bush, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and a range of international musicians.

U2 ARE SET to make history as the first-ever Irish songwriters to receive an Ivors Academy Fellowship, the highest honour bestowed by the prestigious music organisation.

Bono, guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton, and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. will join an elite group of songwriters, including Sir Elton John, Kate Bush, Sir Paul McCartney, and Bruce Springsteen, who have all previously been honoured by the UK-based Fellowship.

The Ivors Academy (formerly known as British Academy of Songwriters Composers and Authors) is one of the largest professional associations for music writers in Europe.

The induction ceremony will take place on 22 May at Grosvenor House in London, where U2 will be officially admitted into into the Fellowship.

Adam Clayton expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating that the recognition was “very special indeed”.

“The appreciation of one’s peers is a humbling honour, and we are immensely grateful. We’ve been playing our songs in this country for over 45 years, thank you to all those who have not just supported us, but carried us… producers, engineers, crew, fans, management, label.”

Speasking on the band’s induction, Tom Gray, Chair of The Ivors Academy, praised U2’s impact on pop music.

“With fearless poetic lyricism always centre-stage in panoramic musical vistas, the sound of U2 has redefined the fabric of popular music,” Gray said.

“Their songs are sweeping catalysts: hymnals and rallying cries. U2’s induction into Fellowship honours their seminal contributions to music through exceptional songwriting craft.”

The band’s illustrious career includes 22 Grammy Awards and their 2005 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Bono was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom earlier this year by then-US President Joe Biden, in recognition of his work advocating for poverty alleviation and HIV/AIDS awareness.

The induction ceremony will take place shortly after the release of a new documentary about Bono’s life and one-man show on Apple TV+.

Similar happened in Newgrange recently when a group of students decided to draw one of the kerbstones. Needless to say they were kicked off the tour. Their guide told us it happens quite regularly.

There is graffiti on the walls of the first makeshift gas chamber in Auschwitz. I couldn’t believe anyone would be so ignorant and obnoxious to think their name needed to be scraped into the wall in that place. I had to ask the guide if it was in fact tourists. Utterly disgusted. People like that deserve a good kicking for their arrogance and selfishness.

I know probably the worst possible place you could deface, you have no slight l feel of what it could have been like until you’ve visited it and Dachau both. Its the most offensive defacement I can think of!

I was on a tour of Auschwitz in 2009, and while in the underground cells I could see graffiti on the walls of people who had visited. It is very bad taste to ruin historial sites like that but going on a “human flesh search” is just crazy.

    Hi Wobble,

I didn’t source this from Reddit initially. Hence why the acknowledgement is to the Global Times. When we spot anything on Reddit and use it for a story, we always credit and link back.

Also, Reddit is a two-way street. People post our stuff there, we post interesting stuff/news/Daily Edge items here. For example: http://thedailyedge.thejournal.ie/dungarvan-zombie-survival-923054-May2013/

    Thanks

Yes he was an idiot. He should have included a date.

Before the red thumbs start that’s sort of tongue in cheek. Many Egyptian monuments have graffiti on them, some are from the Roman occupation and some are from the French invasion by Napolean. They all have “X” was here and usually a date. Don’t be to hard on the idiot. History is full if them :-)

I recall on a visit to Shakespeares House there was a window in the upstairs room covered in etched graffiti. It was the highlight of the trip. Royalty, the high and mighty, unknowns. It was fascinating reading. I don’t want to justify what the kid did but perhaps history will judge him more kindly.
