TODAY MARKS 100 years since the publication of James Joyce’s Ulysses.
Joyce spent around seven years writing the novel, which is considered one of the most influential ever written.
A plethora of events are taking place in Ireland and around the world today to mark the centenary.
Writing in The Journal, historian Donal Fallon says Dublin is increasingly grateful that Joyce gave the Liffeyside city its place in literary history.
“It is a book that has encouraged others to write, and a book that reminds us that everyday life is a story worth telling,” Fallon writes.
It’s also James Joyce’s birthday, the writer was born on 2 February 1882 – 140 years ago today.

Not since last time you asked this question back in 2021.
Yes I have yes I did yes.
I wavered between “I have read it” and “I have tried to read it” as there are two chapters I couldn’t wrap my head around for the life of me (If you have read it you’ll know the two I’m talking about).
I went to see the original manuscript in the US and managed to recognise that the two pages on display were from the 2nd Chapter (Telemachus). It’s at times like this I carried a monocle around with me.

I liked The Dead more than Ulysses, but yes, I did read it once.
I saw the cartoon Ulysses 31 is that close enough ?
There was a page of it framed and hung on the wall of the toilets of a pub I used to frequent so I would read that page while having a pee.
I was half way through it and then my Kindle broke (first day of holiday abroad).
This was 9 years ago.
I will go back to it soon.

I read bits of the book over a period of years, so in that sense, I have read it.

Great cartoon I watched it in the 80s
One of the most important books in modern literature and a masterpiece which changed how the novel was written. Not an easy read, granted, but the influence the book has had is enormous.
