United Nations issues 'racism warning' over growing US tensions
A UN committee has said the move is aimed at helping prevent “existing problems from escalating into conflict”.
A UN COMMITTEE tasked with combatting racism has issued a formal “early warning” over conditions in the United States, a rare move often used to signal the potential of a looming civil conflict.
The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination said it had invoked its “early warning and urgent action procedure” because of the proliferation of racist demonstrations in the US.
It specifically noted the unrest in Charlottesville, Virginia, in which a woman was killed after an avowed white supremacist ploughed his car into a group of anti-racism counter-protesters.
The racism committee, part of the UN human rights office, can issue a formal early warning to help prevent “existing problems from escalating into conflict” or to “prevent a resumption of conflict where it has previously occurred”, according to the rights office’s website.
US President Donald Trump has been widely criticised for his response to the Charlottesville clashes, after he said “both sides” were to blame for the violence.

‘Alarmed’
The UN committee urged Washington DC, “as well as high-level politicians and public officials, to unequivocally and unconditionally reject and condemn racist hate speech”, without mentioning Trump by name.
“We are alarmed by the racist demonstrations, with overtly racist slogans, chants and salutes by white nationalists, neo-Nazis, and the Ku Klux Klan, promoting white supremacy and inciting racial discrimination and hatred,” committee head Anastasia Crickley said in a statement.
The committee monitors compliance with the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, which the US ratified in 1994.
The US warning marks the seventh such alert issued in the past decade. They mainly concern countries gripped by ethnic and religious strife, including Burundi, Nigeria, Iraq and Ivory Coast.

People will blame Donald Trump for this, and will be wrong to do so. It seems clear to me, who the real culprits are: Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
@Liam flag: Yes, let us not forget the liberal press. Or the “Fake News Media” as us in the know call it. What their involvement was I cannot say, but I am sure they are at fault!
@Clever Jake: If I thought the majority was delusional, I’d step back and reevaluate my positions, just to make sure. Maybe more people should do this.
@Clever Jake: An easy mistake to make! To be honest I think I might have fooled a fair few Trump supporters into believing I was serious. Delusional half-wits that they are.
@Liam flag: “If I thought the majority was delusional, I’d step back and reevaluate my positions”
Islam is soon to be the world’s most popular religious ideology. When that happens, are you going to step back and say “hmm, maybe that story about Mohammed flying to the moon on a winged horse is true”?
@Malachi: No because I have previously considered it. I said I would reevaluate my position, I didn’t say I would change my position. Open mindedness and being receptive to evidence, is all I’m advocating for.
@Liam flag: Re-evaluate means to reconsider, so having previously considered Islam to be false you’d still have to re-evaluate it;
“If I thought the majority was delusional, I’d step back and reevaluate my positions”. That’s what the word means.
Being receptive and open to evidence is fine, saying that because a view is held by the majority it is somehow more worthy of being considered it utter nonsense. You should evaluate every claim based on the evidence for it, without consideration for how many people believe the claim. It’s irrelevant.
It clearly shows that members of the left attacking right wing protesters yet the media ignored the attacks. A right wing speaker was also attacked but this was again largely ignored. The scary thing is that these groups are armed to the teeth with automatic weapons and pistols so it is only a matter of time before someone starts a gun fight. I’ve no time for these alt-right groups, nazis or the KKK but I equally have no time for the Antifa/BLM thugs either.
Antifa dress in black, cover their faces, attack police and yet the media concentrate on the actions of the right only. Recently a statue of George Washington was defaced and a video posted online. How long will it take or who will have to get killed before the Antifa/BLM thugs are put into the same category of violent perpetrators as the right? The US is going to get a shock some day when they wake up and realize that they have spent so much time concentrating on a minority bunch of white supremacists that they didn’t stop the monster that is the violent loony Left.
@Brian Ward: What group has the ‘record’ of actually killing people in the US ? And for a person that vehemently defends the actions of the IRA on here, you seem to have a a bit of a problem with two groups that have never done any killing :)
“After a planned far-right “free speech” rally disbanded, riot police and counter protesters — mostly young black men and far-left anti-fascists — clashed in downtown Boston Saturday afternoon.”
@Brian Ward: Do I see automatic guns being brandished around in those photos ? No I don’t .Is any black individual that is now seen at any protest automatically a member of BLM movement ? Don’t think so Brian..Could you show me where the BLM movement have called for violence in their manifesto- because I’ve yet to see it ..And as I have already said to you..you are one person on here that will vehemently stand up for the IRA,so why do you stand against a crowd that just want to see themselves being treated equally by the police ? It’s a bit of a head shaker Brian..
@The Dunes Of Inchy: I don’t see what the IRA has to do with what is going on in the States other than you trying to distract from my pointing out of leftist violence. I presume you missed my other post on here but I can summarize it for you. Antifa/BLM protesters are using violence to try to achieve their aims and that comes under the definition of terrorism. You don’t have to explicitly call for violent actions to to come under this definition if you silently endorse them by ignoring them. How many Antifa thugs have you seen trying to stop their comrades smashing up shops and business’s? How many BLM members protested at the shootings and murders of police officers?
If you want to bury your head in the sand and ignore leftist violence that’s fine by me. As I have already said I have no time for the right wing, armed to the teeth headbangers but by concentrating on their actions alone the US is ignoring the storm that is coming down the road. When more cops are ambushed and murdered, more property is destroyed and more communities are terrorized by mobs that go unchecked by PC liberals sooner or later the Antifa/BLM are going to explode. When that happens and I would say that it will happen sooner rather than later will you still be defending the violent left?
@Brian Ward: I just find it extremely amusing that you would go on about the BLM movement using violence (which they don’t ) and vehemently standing up for an organisation (IRA) that has been responsible for huge amounts of deaths..The BLM movement have had around two thousand marches in the US,please let me know on how many of them that they have asked their supporters to go out and kill/maim police officers ? Because I cannot find any Brian. What have you against a ‘NEW’ organisation that wants to be treated well by the police? It’s not a s if they’ve been around for years and have the same PR as a well oiled organisation has..They’re the underdogs of American society who will get things wrong .Something which even Obama pointed that out to them..
And as for the sk**bag that organised that march, even Richard Spencer has distanced himself from him, after he came out with his despicable comment on Heather Heyer..
@Brian Ward: Maybe you’re just angry at Brian Ward. Deep down. Just a wee bit. If you could find room in your heart to love Brian Ward, you could go on to love other things. Like cakes and tea and humans and rainbows and unicorns and smutty drawings of unicorns and… golly, Brian! Why not try? Don’t you see? Hatred will never love you back, Brian… but love just might. Jesus is on the mainline, Brian – will you accept the charges?
It seems the biggest danger isn’t from a few thousand white supremacists but the masses of Marxist lefties and we have history to know that this is how it started in Russia and China. The media pushing it too.
@Roger Clarke: This is why they are deliberately pushing people to the left thru mass poverty even thou we have record wealth being created, but it’s all going to the top. A socialist Marxist society is the super elites wet dream.
Let’s hope foreign interests don’t use this as a reason to arm and fund extremists in a proxy war under the guise of preserving democracy with the tacit support of biased media outlets.
@The Dunes Of Inchy: I didn’t realize that you actually have to kill someone to be regarded as a violent/terrorist group. The accepted definition of a terrorist group is the use of violence to achieve a political aim. Do you mean to tell me that the violence perpetrated on the streets of the US by left wing groups should be ignored until someone gets killed? Should we ignore the police officers that are ambushed and murdered by people stirred up by the BLM movement? Should we ignore the destruction of property, terrorizing communities and suppression of basic civil liberties?
At the recent Boston free speech rally who was it attacked the police? In case you missed it here is a report from Vice News.@The Dunes Of Inchy: I didn’t realize that you actually have to kill someone to be regarded as a violent/terrorist group.
@Brian Ward: “Should we ignore the police officers that are ambushed and murdered by people stirred up by the BLM movement?” Should we ignore the police report which stated that this guy worked alone and that it was also a peaceful protest?
Too much alt-right hyperbole & not enough facts from you :)
@The Dunes Of Inchy: “Should we ignore the police report which stated that this guy worked alone and that it was also a peaceful protest?” The same could be said of the guy who drove the car into protesters in Charlottesville yet the media tries desperately to link him to the alt right protesters that also held a peaceful, federal permitted protest.
The shooter in the Dallas shootings, Micah Xavier Johnson, was motivated by the rhetoric of the BLM along with more extremist groups. So what is the difference between these 2 men other than the view that one side is violent and the other side are a bunch of law abiding, God fearing citizens?
@Brian Ward: Some ‘peaceful protest’ when they come armed to the teeth eh.That killer was also seen in the company of the s**mbags the ‘Vanguard’ throughout the day.But I will wait for the court case and the details that comes from that..
And as for the Dallas shooter ? He acted alone…
Can you tell me what ‘rhetoric’ the BLM movement were asking for that would get a guy to shoot those police officers ?
Ross Kemp documentary on sky one few weeks ago featured the divide in America. It’s worth a look. They said this would happen very soon. Didn’t think it was that soon
@Declan Moran: what a stupid statement, if you knew your facts you would quickly realise that obama is 10 times the racist that trump will ever be and has alot to answer for with the divide that exists here in america now
@Brendan Coyne: Stupid statement from you.To help you along, you should do a bit of research on the Republican meeting on the day of Obama’s inauguration ..
@The Dunes Of Inchy: the meeting you are referring too was for his second term and he had already the damage done in his first four years , you do the research , good lad
@The Dunes Of Inchy: by reading your other comments on this article you seem a little confused as to what you are talking about , did u actually read what is presently and has being going here in the states over the last 10years with racial tension
@Brendan Coyne: And I gave you a date on what certain Republicans did to get that ball rolling..It was they who were the ones that had a meeting on the day of Obama’s inauguration-in which they said that they were going to say NO to everything that Obama was going to put to Congress, even if it was for the betterment of it’s citizens..”racist president” = Yawn :)
@Brendan Coyne: I live in the place, and I don’t see any of this tension you talk about.Wise up,most people just get on with their lives, excepting those who want to have a problem,be they left or right.
@Time to Wake Up: This is the most ridiculous comment on the Journal. That would have major implications on the Irish economy. Serious question are you even Irish?
The rednecks with their salutes and flags try to imitate the Nazis while the so-called left unknowingly support the Nazi breeding programme via the education system as the aggressive ‘natural selection’. I see readers express indignation but it is fairly vapid without the overview of history and the tangled academic politics behind it.
Even the UN are imprisoned in history so I can’t see the attraction of being caught inside a technical labyrinth without revisiting how we ended up at this historical juncture with such awful and unreasonable convictions. The difference between education and indoctrination can be a fine distinction yet people seem to prefer the latter even though such an abbreviated history wrecks havoc on society. So well and good, people pay for settling with a swindled view of academic and social politics.
