Up to 16 jobs at risk as Clerys branch closes

Clerys Home Furnishings store set to close in a fortnight.

CLERYS HOME FURNISHINGS store in Blanchardstown, Dublin is to close with the potential loss of 16 jobs.

A spokesperson confirmed to TheJournal.ie this evening that the store is set to close on 16 September.

“The unit has incurred significant losses since the beginning of the recession,” they added. “Trading continues at all other Clerys Home Furnishing stores as normal.”

The spokesperson could not comment on whether it would be possible for the Blanchardstown roles to be transferred elsewhere within the Clerys business.

SIPTU has said it is seeking an immediate meeting with Clerys management over the decision to close the Blanchardstown store. Graham Macken, SIPTU organiser, said that today’s announcement cane as a “shock” to the workers.

“While they were aware of the company’s current financial difficulties, they were not informed until today that management intended to close the store during September,” he said.

“The majority of the workers are SIPTU members. Union representatives are seeking an immediate meeting with management to discuss the possibility of saving at least some of the threatened jobs and redundancy terms.”

Shame that such an iconic irish store cant be modern or “hip” enough to sell things. Just look at BT, people buy into the upper middle class lifestyle, you cant do that with clerys, hence why its failing, look at all the BT bags in the streets, now where are the clerys bags, they just need to totally remarket the store

That unit will be filled in no time… An Aldi would do well in that side of the shopping centre! :)

Love the pic. But the jobs lost are in blanch. It’s16 jobs, in the scheme of things it ain’t gonna bankrupt us.. As news goes, world wide is this the best you can do? Is everything now newsworthy? Or is your budget small and restricted to a crap news corp?

An iconic Dublin business known for generations is shedding jobs. I would think that’s newsworthy. Maybe you’d prefer if there were more job losses at Clerys so this story could justify its place here. Some people.
