Aldi, gardaí, and Clare Daly: The week in numbers

Plus: how much does the new baby elephant calf at Dublin Zoo weigh?

EVERY WEEK, TheJournal.ie offers a selection of statistics and numerical nuggets to help you digest the week that has just passed.

€18.4 billion – The estimated personal fortune of Karl Albrecht, the 94-year-old founder of Aldi who was buried this week.

€500,000 - The amount in emergency funding that Ireland is sending to families in Gaza.

€150,000 - The amount that Dublin City Council wants to sell a site for to allow families to set up their own co-operative housing development.

€70,000 - The amount that a former employee of Tipperary County Council was awarded when it was found that the born-again Christian was dismissed after ‘preaching’ to staff and members of the public.

>2,700 - The number of job applications a Dublin pub received through Snapchat after saying it would use the social media app to assess potential employees.

1,197 - The number of complaints made by members of the public against the gardaí last year.

70 - The number of Greyhound Recycling workers in Dublin who are on strike over plans to cut their pay.

68 cent - The cost of a stamp for a domestic letter since last Monday, when the price increased by 8 cent.

12.5 stone - The weight of the new baby elephant (who doesn’t yet have a name) at Dublin Zoo.

2 - The number of documentaries about the Garth Brooks debacle which aired this week. Both TV3 and RTE showed programmes about the saga.

2 - The number of TDs arrested at Shannon Airport this week when they attempted to inspect two US military aircraft.

@Gavin Scott: well to be honest I never paid my water bill and that was my choice, and I have lots of friends that have and haven’t and that’s there choice and their business, and I know lots of people that have plenty of money and never paid it and I know a few that did pay and I can assure you none of them are crazy as you like to describe them, so go take your ideology some where else because I for one don’t buy into it.

@Casper: how do you suggest they should be run Casper? Will you work as a CEO for free? No? What would it take for you to work as a CEO of a charity for free? Do you honestly think that if charities were staffed by volunteers at all levels that they would be more successful than they are now?

I don’t know you. (Well I do cos I’m Jesus). But I imagine you know someone who’s kid has been a patient in Crumlin or Temple Street. I can guarantee that their treatment or indeed quality of life was improved by the work of charity, led by staff on the payroll.

Not to mention the fact that electricity usage is down because most people are trying to save money – yet the cost of electricity has soared. Makes no real sense. Donate hard earned cash to a mixed bunch of NGOs . Who does what and how it would be spent is not clearly defined.

    @pat seery:
Do you live in the countryside? It makes sense for people in cities, towns and villages to be on a water supply. But when people choose to live in the ar$e-end of nowhere (usually at a significantly lower cost to living in populated and serviced areas) they also need to accept that there might not be ready access to a pumped water supply. Did you really expect Irish Water to carry a pumped water supply to every one-off house dotted about the countryside? Surely you knew when you built/bought your house that it needed to be supplied by its own well and there would be associated maintenance costs?

No I certainly wouldn’t give it to one of the well known charities in Ireland as their CEOs have been proven to be as corrupt as their political friends who helped appoint them. I’d sooner divide it evenly and give it to the first 5 homeless people that I meet on the street or buy ingredients for a soup kitchen. Well known charities have been destroyed in this country by the money obsessed parasites at their helms unfortunately.

Only an ignorant fool signed up to that joke quango. Be thankful that the hard work of right minded people fighting against the commodification of a life essential natural resource has worked out for those of you who kept your head down and paid up. I’m happy to see everybody is getting their money back but still I’m disappointed and don’t quite have the same respect for some people I know who bottled it at the time.

@Super Ted: People paid this charge for a number of reasons: eh they might have been compelled to do so under a letting agreement. Would you not feel sympathy for more vulnerable people who felt coerced in to paying this? Mounting bills can be very upsetting to certain people and many would have paid rather than see bills and reminders coming in. Also, players may have read stories about water pressure being turned down to a trickle so paid up to avoid this. You may feel those who paid are mindless, spineless sheep but no one willingly paid this charge.

@Cheeky Bums: Sorry, no I don’t feel sympathy for anybody who doesn’t see the bigger picture. I can’t rationalise somebody propping up a quango to keep their landlord happy when future generations would have been saddled with excessive water charges. It’s not about the individual and what suits them in the moment, water is life! It has to be paid for out of general taxation, simple as.

When Phil Hogan awarded Dublin City Council Manager the job of CEO of Irish Water his salary was €200,000 a year. There was a €420,000 pay off package to go with the sickening salary. Last week Tierney was awarded another €100,000 “because he would’ve been entitled to it had he stayed at Dublin City Council.

It is not those who were bullied into paying water charges who should be giving to charity.
